Best Patios/Terraces in Calgary
A nice day in Calgary means you’ll see the patios packed from early in the day until late at night. Calgary Plus.ca presents our top 10 best bets for a sun-baked afternoon outside.
The Ship, as it is most often called, is a city landmark on 17 Avenue SW, and many Calgarians have met for lunch and stayed for dinner (and much, much later) after landing a table on the roomy sidewalk patio here.
The Melrose upped the ante during Calgary’s run for the Stanley Cup in 2004, providing patio-dwellers with some of the best seats in town. The innovative management broadcasted the games on the side of a big white truck parked out front, making Melrose the unofficial Heart of the Red Mile. They have kept the party going year round since – Stanley Cup or not!
Calgary’s Eau Claire Market is found along the Bow River just south of Prince’s Island. Both are visible from the Barley Mill’s upstairs patio, which was made using old lumber from an original Alberta distillery.
The name means “beautiful terrace”, and they mean it. The covered stone patio here is accented by planters overflowing with flowers and encased by a wrought-iron fence. The atmosphere is complemented by a classic, reasonably priced Italian menu.
Ceili’s roof-top patio has been busy since the pub first opened, and shows no signs of slowing down. The downtown set often makes this their after-work stop, and patrons get a great view of the city’s coming and goings from up high.
The Living Room is decorated like, yes, a posh living room in an upscle abode, and the patio is the classy front yard. It’s small enough to be intimate, and diners feel like they’ve been invited to an exclusive cocktail party.
Located in the established southeast community of Lake Bonavista, the Newport Grill’s patio looks out over the waters and has the feeling of an interior BC holiday getaway.
Another 17th Avenue SW denizen, the Yardhouse is more bar than restaurant, and the patio is usually full from opening until close. It’s a fun and casual place to spend the day…and night!
This classy French restaurant has been in business since 1978, and its patio is a private enclave out back that sits in the shadow of Calgary’s St. Mary’s Cathedral. The result is a location with a distinctly European feel, a real treat in a city that is mostly brand-spankin’-new and sometimes a touch souless.
During the Stampede, Buzzards’ patio is the place to be. They serve a menu of classic cowboy faves, even the infamous Prarie Oysters, and gussy the joint up with a wooden corral and plenty of hay for the July festivities. Come with your boots on!
