The Buzz
Though Calgary boasts a number of excellent local breweries, sometimes your taste buds just need to get away from it all. Take them to 1410 World Bier House. Since June of 2005, this busy bar has served up the best of beers from around the world with service and food to match. Take a seat on their prime patio space to watch the hustle and bustle of 17th Avenue or sneak in back for some video games. Daily beer and food specials are available and there is a DJ on Friday & Saturday nights.
The Beer
1410 isn’t the kind of place you amble into and ask “what do you have on tap?” With 16 draught beers and another 54 by the bottle, be prepared to make a tough choice. Unique draft options include the Scottish lager Tennents, Belgium’s famous Belle Vue Kriek (made from beer and cherries) and British beer Boddingtons. Bottles available range from Jamaica’s Red Stripe, to the German wheat beer Erdinger. There are daily beer specials available for both pints and bottles.
The Food
You’ve heard of wine and food pairings—1410 kicks it up a notch and offers beer and appetizer pairings. Their global fusion menu has a wide selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and main courses. Both their pizza sauces and doughs are made fresh on site, as are their salad dressings. They also feature a moderately priced full weekend brunch, including French toast, eggs Benny and seven types of omelettes.
