The Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association (ARGRA) is a non-profit organization first formed in 1991 as the Alberta Gay Rodeo Association. As part of the International Gay Rodeo Association they host the annual Canadian Rockies International Rodeo at Symons Valley Ranch. The three day event, held the July long weekend, is one of the most popular events on the gay calendar, attracting people from around the world.
Dances
ARGRA has monthly fundraising dances, held at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Centre. The dances offer a variety of music from country to pop and dance. They often have themes and each year they host a Christmas dinner. Individual teams also hold fundraisers throughout the year to be able to participate in the event.
The Rodeo
The annual Canadian Rockies International Rodeo is a must-attend event. Symons Valley Ranch has a huge camping area for the weekend. Attendees spend the weekend at events like the Friday night cabaret, pancake breakfasts and the extremely popular Saturday night dance. Rodeo events for the weekend include events such as Bareback Bronc Riding, Barrel Racing, Bull Riding, Calf Roping and many more. The rodeo also features three “camp events” - Goat Dressing; Steer Decorating and The Wild Drag Race.
Volunteer
ARGRA is always looking for volunteers. An event of this magnitude cannot happen without those behind the scenes that make it tick. The hard work of the volunteers combined with the many event sponsors help make ARGRA work. Planning for the next years rodeo begins immediately after the current years ends. They hold their annual general meeting in September and plan throughout the year for the event.
