Roast beef doesn't spring to mind when you think fast food outlet. That was before brothers Leroy and Forrest Raffel came up with the idea of Arby's. They opened the first Arby's restaurant in 1965 in Akron, Ohio, featuring a 69-cent roast beef sandwich, potato chips and iced tea.
Although known for its beef n' cheddar bun, the slow-cooked roast beef sandwich still comes with a special delightful sauce of its own and it's one of the many reasons the restaurant remains popular with people who need to eat and run (or are looking for a reasonably priced lunch menu). Today, Arby's has franchises as far away as Japan and Mexico, and while still known for the roast beef sandwiches, the menu has been expanded to include other "lighter" fare such as chicken, fish, and turkey.
Lots Of Locations
With more than a dozen locations spread throughout the city, the food chain also serves up potatoes (fried or baked), colesaw, salads, desserts, shakes and a variety of other drinks. You won't find deals like a 69-cent roast beef sandwich anymore, but prices are still reasonable and well within the range of other fast food prices.
For non-smokers it's interesting to note that Arby's lays claim to the fact it was the first global fast food chain to institute a ban on smoking at all its franchises in 1994.
