Profile Last Updated: April 29, 2009
Though the name may conjure up images of spittoons and poker games, the Auburn Saloon bucks tradition and offers a sophisticated, comfortable lounge that has long been popular with theatre-goers as well as stagehands, performers, and nearly everyone connected with theatre in Calgary. The interior brings to mind a vintage theatre lobby, complete with velvet curtains and deep tones that evoke a cozy atmosphere.
A central watering hole
Once located in the Centre for Performing Arts, the restaurant was moved in 2003 to the former Mercedes Benz showroom at the base of the Calgary Tower. The Auburn continues to be popular with theatre crowds seeking a pre- or post-show refreshment, and can be found half a block from the Centre and literally next door to the Vertigo Mystery Theatre, located in the Tower Centre.
Tasty vittles
A flair for the dramatic is evident in the menu at the Auburn Saloon, with cocktails such as Satan’s Whiskers and the Mark Anthony available. Martinis are favoured here, though there is also the Auburn Ale on tap, a brew named for the Saloon. For food, the Auburn has a selection of appetizers and finer dining menu items, from gourmet sandwiches to pizzas to a storied brandied pumpkin soup. All the menu items are moderately priced. The Saloon is open for lunch and is in a good location for the business crowd as well as travellers enjoying the Glenbow Museum or shopping in the downtown core. The Auburn also features different art exhibits every month, and provides an opportunity for patrons to meet artists on the first Thursday of each month.
