A panini is a sandwich made from a small loaf of bread, typically a ciabatta. Traditionally the loaf is cut horizontally and filled with meats, cheeses and other foods. In Italy panini is served both cold and hot, often being buttered on the outside and grilled in a press. The name is derived from the Italian “panino”, which means “a small bread roll”. In Italian, panino is singular and panini is the plural. However, many other languages have now borrowed the term and panini is used most often to mean the singular, with paninis used as the plural.
