An Old World Bakery
Just walking into Bernie’s Bavarian Bakery on Railway Street is an olfactory treat, with the fabulous aromas of fresh baked goods enchanting your nose. You will find a selection of perfectly baked loaves including breakfast bread, flaxseed whole wheat and speltbread. There are also gourmet fresh-baked pies stuffed with fresh apples, wild blueberries or mango. The pastries on offer are such things as whole wheat oatmeal cookies, cherry butter tartes, cinnamon cookies and linzer torte. The latter is a delight for the palate and the eyes. It is a pastry shell generously filled with raspberry jam and covered with a latticework of flakey pastry strips. Yummy stuff.
Baking With Organic Flours
The breads and other goodies at Bernie’s are all baked with flours produced from organically grown grains. Many of the items are made from spelt, a type of wheat that is used extensively in the health food market. Spelt requires fewer fertilizers than other wheats, and consequently it has gained favour with the organic farming movement. While spelt is not entirely gluten free, it contains less than other varieties and is looked upon as suitable for people who have a wheat allergy or intolerance. Bernie’s produces breads for many health food outlets in the Calgary area.

In addition to its fine baked goods, Bernie’s offers customers a selection of teas, European chocolates from Milka and Ritter, organic rolled oats, flaxseed, unrefined cane sugar, pumpkin seeds, and seasalt. It also sells a selection of organically produced flours including whole wheat, kingsgrain (kamut), and spelt. Grandma Nunweiller’s brand flours on offer include pancake and waffle mixes that include spelt, buttermilk, whole grain, and wheat and flax. Next on the agenda at Bernie’s is the addition of a coffee bar, which will make the aromas even richer.
