Not All About Ice Cream
For the longest time, Cochrane seemed to be famous only for Mackay’s ice cream. So it’s with mixed surprise to find there’s actually a Cajun-inspired restaurant that’s been operating in this quaint little town since 1999. Blue Dog Cafe’s home is a renovated house turned into a restaurant. What’s more, they serve up live blues and jazz and hold a special event that’s become a favourite among locals and tourists alike. This restaurant has been reviewed by Calgary Sun, given a three-star mark for food, four for service.

Cajun-inspired, Louisiana Style
For those days when Western style food can seem like too much of a good thing, it’s wicked knowing this Cochrane restaurant has something different on the menu. Blue Dog offers their take on Cajun cooking, with staples like jambalaya, ribs, Creole mustard chicken, rabbit and New Orleans rib eye. You can sample their grilled tuna, halibut or red snapper “catch of the day.” Vegetarians and gluten-sensitive folks will find some offerings suitable for their diets on the menu. Unwind on the weekends with a live blues and jazz band. Blue Dog also does a once a month Thursday Special, where for a bit of cover, they serve a special menu together with a wine tasting event.

A View of the Downtown
Cochrane’s pretty tame compared to Calgary, so more people are relocating for the peace and quiet. That said, Calgary ex-pats will still be looking for some entertainment and good food, easily found at Blue Dog. This cafe also displays paintings by local artists, offered for sale to their clientele. In the summer, they open their patio and you can people watch while waiting for your order.

Reservations: Call for weekend reservations. We have live blues and jazz entertainment every Friday and Saturday nite.
