At Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids, kids and nutrition are the focus. Without healthy nutrition, kids aren’t able to function at their full potential — personally, socially and academically. Through the two programs offered at Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids, the Food for Thought Program and the Fuel Program, many Calgary children are getting their nutritional needs met when they might not have otherwise.
Food for Thought program
Every day hundreds of kids in 40+ schools throughout Calgary receive lunches through the Food for Thought Program. The Food for Thought Program targets kids in need who might not otherwise eat lunch due to their individual circumstances. Each lunch is nutritious and offers up a sandwich, fruit, vegetable, milk or juice and snack. The Food for Thought Program is offered free of charge.
Fuel program
The Fuel Program targets street youth. Over 2,500 lunches are made each week and delivered to local Calgary agencies that come into contact with street youth. These agencies include: EXIT Community Outreach, CUPS Community Health Centre, Street Teams and the Calgary Alpha House. By offering a free lunch, street youth are then also encouraged to take advantage of the services that are offered by the cooperating agencies.
Why is good nutrition important?
Good nutrition is key in helping anyone, especially growing children, stay healthy. It contributes to a strong immune system and aids in the healing process. Besides keeping a body healthy, good nutrition helps in memory and concentration functions. Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids is a non-profit society and is run largely on volunteerism. Please feel free to contact Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids if you would like to make a difference in the life of a kid.
