The Calgary Flames have been delighting their fans with on-ice speed, big goals, and superstar calibre players since moving to Calgary from Atlanta in 1980. The long list of accomplishments for this NHL team include two President’s Trophies, three trips to the league finals, and in 1989, being crowned the Stanley Cup champions. They have won a variety of other awards and set a number of attendance records at their home, the Pengrowth Saddledome.
Fabulous fans
During the 2003/2004 season, the Flames made their fans proud by going all the way to game seven of the Stanley Cup finals. They entered the playoffs as underdogs and took the league by surprise when they knocked out the top seated team in the Western Conference. The always enthusiastic Calgary fans made news around the continent for their fervent support of the team. The ‘Red Mile’ consisted of tens of thousands of red-wearing supporters packed onto 17th Avenue SW during and after both home and away games. Fans continued their passionate support of the team the following season, and will no doubt keep it up for the foreseeable future.
Community commitment
The Flames organization, along with players like captain Jarome Iginla, have shown their dedication and appreciation to the city by being involved in a number of charitable organizations. The Flames Foundation for Life supports the community through initiatives in education, medical research, health, and amateur sports and recreation. They are committed to building a better community through their support of projects.
