A New Generation Of Libraries
Regarded as the first in a new generation of public libraries, Shawnessy Library opened its doors to the public on Sept. 15, 2001 as part of the South Fish Creek Complex (also housing twin ice arenas, the Bishop O'Bryne High School, and a full-service YMCA, the latter to open in spring 2002).

Costing $3.8 million, the library was built to serve one of the fastest growing segments of the city that includes the souther communities of Bridlewood, Chaparral, Evergreen, Midnapore, Millrise, Shawnee Slopes, Shawnessy, Somerset, and Sundance.

The library has 19,400 square feet of floor space and blends an inviting atmosphere encouraging visitors to browse the collections in a casual and comfortable setting with the technological resources that are increasingly important for meeting work, education and recreational needs.

Special Features
Some of the special features at the library include:

An inviting kids' zone with preschool CDROM stations and comfortable child-sized furniture.
A well-stocked collection for teens.
A quiet study room with 15 study carols.
A multipurpose program room, with seating for 40 people.
Comfortable reading areas, including a fireside lounge.
Barrier-free access for Calgarians facing visual or physical challenges.
24 computers for public use with Internet access and Microsoft Office software capabilities.
A special adaptive workstation for the blind or special-needs.
Capacity for 110,000 items including books, magazines, newspapers, CDs and videos.
