Child and Youth Friendly Calgary was established 15 years ago to give youth a voice in the community and contribute to it politically and socially. It helps kids establish values that will last for their entire lives. Child and Youth Friendly Calgary encompasses different agencies and programs. There are ten different programs and events supported and created by CYFC. All of these programs give kids the ability to be heard and make positive contributions to the community. All of these programs teach youth about philanthropy, volunteerism as well as providing a great boost in self-esteem.
Benefits of Volunteering
There are other benefits to CYFC’s programs. Many schools allow youth to get credits for volunteering with the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC). This means that not only will youth be making a positive contribution to the community; they can also help further their education. The YVC is one of the first programs started by CYFC. It gives youth access to over 130 non-profit agencies looking for volunteers. The YVC divides youth into teams that are headed by team leaders. The team leaders are trained to help youth as they engage in their volunteer work.
Making Connections
Along with YVC, there are special projects undertaken by the CYFC. These are programs created especially by the CFYC that have a strong focus on specific issues. One of their major recent projects is called YouthScape. It’s an initiative aimed at getting youth fully engaged and connected to the community in Calgary. CYFC wants all youth in Calgary to be heard and seen when it comes to decisions affecting them and the community at large. YouthScape is a comprehensive approach to making this happen.
