Vintage Art Glass a Specialty
Circa, literally, means “about” or “around”, and is used in historical writings when the dates of events are approximately, as opposed to precisely, known. In this shop, the reference is to the middle years of the 20th century when a design form known as Mid-Century Modern was in vogue. The style is defined by its modern forms, biomorphic shapes, sensual lines, and the high quality of its materials and workmanship. The glass objects, be they vases, vessels, lamps, or figurative pieces, are stunning, with vibrant colours and a high degree of clarity in the glass – traits that are seldom seen in such objects made today.
Art Glass from Famous European Studios
Virtually all of the pieces sold at Circa are imported, and are authentic hand-blown vintage pieces from studios that were working in the mid-century, most of them in Europe. Circa handles Italian lines like Segusa, Barbini, Cenedese and Venini; Scandinavian lines like Flygsfors and Holmegaard; French names like Vannes, Cofrac and Daum; and Czech studios like Exbor, Skrdlovice and Beranek. A visit to the shop is an education in the art form. The proprietor of the shop is very knowledgeable on the subject, and is more than happy to discuss the pieces with customers.

Art Deco was an international design movement popular from roughly the “roaring twenties” until the start of the Second World War. The movement affected all of the decorative arts, including architecture, interior design, fashion, painting and the graphic arts.
