The Place
The entrance to Dickens Pub is on the east side ground level of the Crescent Centre building, off 9th Street S.W. Negotiate a short hallway and you will find a wall-mounted chalkboard which lists the day’s specials. Turn right, descend two short flights of stairs, and you are there. The large room is finished in dark wood, with a long, well-stocked bar at the back. There are pool tables, dart boards, a dance floor, and VLT’s available for customer enjoyment. Wall mounted large-screen TV’s are scattered around the room, one of which has a screen that is absolutely wall- sized. In short, you have all the fixings for some serious partying here. The pub is home to two Australian Rules Football clubs, the Calgary Kangaroos and the Calgary Bears, and that, in itself, might tell you something.

The Food
The food is typical Canadian pub fare, with appetizers like calamari, poutine, dry ribs, potato skins, and jalapeno poppers. Sandwiches include hamburgers of various descriptions, BLT’s, grilled ham and cheese, Philly beef, and Philly chicken. Fish and chips, steak sandwiches, and a variety of pizza are also on tap.

Some Special Events
Monday nights at Dickens is Comedy Night, with an open mic and an invitation to all comers to try out their material on the crowd. Both amateurs and professionals appear, some doing improvisations, some trying out new material, and some touring headliners just saying hello. Tuesday night is Band Warz. Wednesday night is 25-cent wings. Thursday, Friday and Saturday see live bands in the pub, with a busy dance floor. And by the way, if you are looking for any memorabilia of the pub’s namesake, Charles Dickens, you won’t find it here.
