The Engineered Air Theatre is one of many great performing arts venues located in Calgary’s EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts on Olympic Plaza. While the theatre boasts modern sound and lighting, and contemporary décor, it is accentuated with distinctly antique fittings, namely the very ones belonging to the Empress Theatre, an early 1900s landmark in Calgary’s downtown core. The elegant interior is an unexpected treat, giving the theatre an air of class and an authentic look and feel.
Host with the most
Built in 1994, the Engineered Air Theatre has been the scene of some of Calgary’s most innovative theatre. The lecture-style venue is perfect for theatrical performances, and musical concerts ranging from acoustic blues to modern pop rock. The intimate theatre also houses play readings and lectures and is a choice venue for seminars, banquets and receptions.
Logistics
EPCOR CENTRE’s Engineered Air Theatre offers seating for up to 185 with flexible main floor seating that can be arranged in lecture style or cabaret style format. The venue has a coat check, two convenient entrances and is wheelchair accessible. It also has a modern lobby and a raised balcony. Located in the heart of downtown Calgary, the Engineered Air Theatre is virtually on the c-train line, close to plenty of restaurants and shopping.
Background tidbit
The Engineered Air Theatre is built on the very downtown Calgary site once occupied by the Empress Theatre. In 1911 this Calgary landmark was torn down to make way for what is now called the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts. Remnants from the historic Empress include interior fittings currently integrated in the design of the Engineered Air Theatre.
