The word “esoteric” can be defined as something that is only understood by a select few. Esoterik’s artists are keen to point out that although everyone may know what a tattoo is, not everyone knows what it takes to actually get one. Indeed, their mantra is, “It’s all about the pain. The ink and the jewellery are just souvenirs.” Meaning, sometimes the process is just as important as the final result.

The workers at Esoterik genuinely like each other. In fact, tattooist Alex and piercer Shelley’s relationship went even further, marrying after meeting in Mexico and ultimately combining their talents to create their first baby: a one-stop-shop for body art aficionados. Shelley specializes in metal, and Alex (with protégé Johnny) take on the ink. After you’ve either dreamt of or doodled your next addition to the canvas of your body, take the idea to Alex, who is able to transfer just about anything from paper to skin. For those who like to decorate themselves painlessly, Shelley also does henna tattoos, which is a far more relaxing process, as well as far less permanent.

Trusted since 1998, Esoterik is fully licensed, and their equipment is tested regularly and maintained to the highest of standards. Bookings require a deposit, meaning anybody who chickens out will lose a few bucks. For piercings, customers must be 16 years of age with legal picture ID, and patrons looking for a tattoo will need to present legal ID proving they are at least 18 years of age along with a completed Tattoo Consent Form.
