Early History
Fort Calgary is located on the banks of the Bow River between downtown and Inglewood. Fort Calgary stands exactly where it was built in 1875. It is instantly recognizable by its wooden stockade. Step inside and find yourself transported back into the 1800s. There are period buildings and many staff dressed in period costumes. There are two well-known buildings there; the first is the 1888 Men’s Barracks, which has Mounted Police exhibits from 1888-1914. There are rooms for private functions decorated in historical style. There’s a Learning Centre, a travelling exhibit gallery and a “Mess Kitchen” or cafeteria.

Dinner and Fresh Air
If you want to enjoy fresh air and Calgary’s history, walk on their 40 kilometers of interpretive trails by the Bow River. Another feature of Fort Calgary is the lovingly restored Deane House. This is a 1906 house built for Captain Richard Deane who was the superintendent of Fort Calgary. It now contains a restaurant that serves brunch and lunch; the food is Continental in style. The Deane House also hosts a public murder mystery dinner theatre. This allows guests to interact with the performers to solve the mystery while enjoying dinner.

Learning and Fun
Another unique aspect of Fort Calgary is its educational programs. These are designed to teach kids about Calgary’s early history in a hands-on way. There are also summer programs for kids. These programs include games and crafts that help teach kids while letting them have fun. Another unique feature is the NWMP Boot Camp. This gives kids a chance to experience an element of what early mounted police training was like.
