Sailing school
Living in the foothills of Alberta, you may not expect to find a sailing club in the middle of Calgary, but believe it or not – there is one! The sailing school is a chance to learn how to sail without having to head hundreds of miles to the nearest ocean. Lessons are held on the Glenmore Reservoir during the summer. The cool water and spray splashing back while cruising past the shore is an added bonus to learning how to sail. Not only will everyone gain an enjoyable new skill, but they’ll have fun doing it.

A series of courses
Whether it’s the excitement of racing or the joy of open-water cruising, the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA.) courses are a great place to start. The basic cruising course is an introduction to everything kids or teens need to know about sailing. The lessons are taught by CYA accredited instructors. From there, you can take the six following CYA. courses, each of which increases in difficulty and includes new skills.

Kids on the water
The Glenmore Sailing Club also offers the Optimist racing program. This is a program for youths to learn sailing skills in an exciting atmosphere. The Optimist is a popular youth racing boat and the course teaches all the needed skills to race it. There’s also a special class for families, in which kids and their parents can learn basic sailing skills together. Adults can gain a fun new skill by taking a basic course in sailing.
