Guess Canada is the Great White North off-shoot of the popular American clothing label, Guess. The company is known for its sexualized advertising campaigns, which utilize black-and-white photos of pop culture icons like Claudia Schiffer and Paris Hilton, in addition to the standard crop of young model hard-bodies. While Guess also produces everything from sweats and polos to watches and jewellery, they are probably best known for their brand-name jeans. For men they offer a number of denim styles, including the Cliff line of boot cut jeans, the Falcon line of classic straight leg jeans and the Rebel line of low rise jeans. All denim comes in a range of colors from standard light blue to black with distressed accents, high-contrast washed look and authentic rips and holes for vintage looks. Women have even more options, like pink Capris and some pants having additional flourishes like appliqués, studs and leather.
Bloomingdale’s to Blockbuster
Guess was originally founded in California in 1981, where it began selling jeans in department stores like Bloomingdale’s. By the mid ’80s, Guess’s designer jeans were one of the most popular brands and they used that success to go on and launch a trio of watches lines, which would eventually be joined by a bevy of other accessories, like designer handbags, wallets, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. They now sell clothing for children as well as perfume, eyewear (oval, round, square and heart shaped frames), shoes and luggage. They recently introduced their first brand extension, Marciano, a line of pricier, runway-inspired styles, now available for both men and women. Guess likes to promote its public standing as high-class and exclusive, placing the emphasis on their quality brand name instead of sales or discounts.
