This Macleod Trail restaurant has been serving Peking-style cuisine to Calgarians for more than 15 years. Best known for its buffets, the original owners of the Home Food Inn are also credited with inventing Calgary's favourite Chinese dish, ginger beef.
The restaurant was originally owned by two sisters, who with the help of their brother, invented the sweet and spicy dish, suitable for Calgary beef lovers. However, the restaurant has since changed hands and ginger beef is now a Calgary mainstay.
The Food
Instead, the Home Food Inn is now best known for its lunch and dinner buffets. The menu offers more than 60 dishes including Peking, Cantonese, Singapore, Thailand and some Japanese cuisine. The all-you-can-eat Sunday buffet features Peking duck and roast ham along with a wide variety of Oriential dishes. Or choose from a menu that includes soups like diced ham with bean curd, scampi Peking style, or black pepper chicken or beef in hot pot. Prices are reasonable (a little more expensive on weekends), but they offer lots of specals including price reductions for children and discounts for seniors. Another special is the lunch box to go featuring three items with rice and pop.
Good For Kids
The restaurant is usually busy, especially at lunchtime during the week so if you don't like crowds you might want to avoid this time period. It has a large dining area with a couple of private areas to the side so waiting is seldom a problem.
It's also a hotspot on weekends for parents with children (even with buffet-style dining). It also caters to private functions with a banquet room for 10 to 35 people and dining hall with a dance floor for groups of up to 220 people. Don't expect anything too fancy. Reasonable prices and good service has been the mainstay for this well-established restaurant.
