Outdoor Enthusiasm
HOG is an offshoot of Hostelling International, which was started in Germany about a century ago. They started to provide hostel accommodations for young people, and have now expanded to day trips that move between hostels. Some of the backcountry cabins they used in the past still exist. The Hostelling Outdoors Group (HOG) has been operating around Calgary since the 1950s. These days, they offer a wide variety of opportunities for lovers of the outdoors. Sometimes, the most fulfilling and enjoyable outdoors experiences are shared in the company of others.

Many Options
HOG offers a myriad of different options for the outdoor enthusiast. The members of the group share a common interest when it comes to exploring the magnificent Rockies. In the summer, you can find them enjoying hiking the trails that stretch through the mountains, scrambling up bare scree slopes and bombing down singletracks on their mountain bikes. Once in a while, HOG also organizes canoe trips and although they aren’t on the schedule, there are opportunities for serious mountaineering trips, as well. Just inquire.

Winter Wonderland
In the winter, HOG doesn’t shut down. They offer cross country ski trips and snowshoeing trip, and if you’re looking for a gentler way to pass a day outdoors, they also organize skating trips on Bowness Lagoon. All of the trips require members to contact the coordinator ahead of time in case of changes. You can join up to three trips before you are required to become a member of Calgary’s HOG. Everyone also must fill out a waiver before travelling.
