Inglewood is said to be the oldest community in Calgary, dating all the way back to the late 1800s. Two early industries in the area were the busy meat-packing plant founded by Pat Burns, and the Calgary Brewery established by A.E. Cross. The opportunities provided by those enterprises originally attracted people to the neighbourhood, and the area is still popular today for its historic value, slightly bohemian vibe and numerous original shops and restaurants. Originally known as East Calgary or Brewery Flats, the area was renamed Inglewood in the early 1900s, taking the moniker from the homestead of Colonel James Walker, a prominent early settler in the region.
The Association
The Inglewood Community Association operates its Community Hall on 24th Avenue S.E. The Hall has three rooms of various sizes, each of which can accommodate various functions. The facilities consist of a main hall, a board room and a games room. There is a commercial kitchen on the premises, as well as a stage and sound system, and the building is wheelchair accessible. A number of organizations make use of the hall regularly, including the local Lions Club, the Inglewood Redevelopment Association, charity and church groups and more. Community volunteers operate three skating rinks on the premises, which are used for hockey, figure skating, curling, and everything else you can do on a sheet of ice.
Rentals Available By Appointment
The rooms at the Inglewood Community Hall are available for rental for such functions as weddings, birthday parties, theatre productions, swaps and flea markets, corporate functions, and other special events. The main hall can accommodate up to 200, the games room up to 60, and the board room up to 20. Reservations are necessary for all events, and applicants are interviewed in advance to confirm that the proposed event is a suitable use of the facility. Call the Hall for further particulars on room rentals.
