The International School of Ballet was founded in Calgary by Umran Sumen, a Masters graduate from Hecettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, and former leading soloist of the country’s National Ballet Company. Before coming to Calgary in the late 1980s, Sumen studied at the Royal Ballet School of London, as well as der Wiener Staatsoper in Austria. She has worked with famous teachers and choreographers world-wide and has produced over thirty classic and modern productions. In 1986 Sumen was appointed the Artistic Director of the Calgary City Ballet.
The International School of Ballet boasts a number of spacious studios, each fully equipped with floating hardwood floors, full-sized mirrors and barres, a piano and sound system. The facility is climate controlled with air conditioning, and offers observation windows from a large waiting area. The School also has private dressing rooms, a full wardrobe department, and a workshop where the sets and props department operates. The studio is located at Heritage Square on Macleod Trail south.
The International School of Ballet’s yearly production, The Nutcracker, is a two-act Christmas Ballet that is a favourite both in Calgary and world-wide. Each September the School conducts auditions for a cast of 70 dancers for this classic performance. Other productions by International School of Ballet include Coppelia, Gloria, Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Etude, Reverie en Rouge, Peter and the Wolf, and La Bayadere (Kingdom of the Shades).
