To Survive and Thrive in Body, Mind and Spirit
This community based organization is designed to holistically combine all the knowledge and resources needed by children with cancer and those who love and care for them. Through camps and community outreach, clinical support and pediatric oncology research, the foundation aims to support children with cancer and ensure recovery in the physical sense and in the heart and mind as well.
The Battle Against Childhood Cancer
Childhood cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death in children. Approximately 100 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in Alberta. As the leading cause of non-accidental death in children, it is also the number one disease killing children from six months of age to early adulthood. Specialized, intensive care is required for these children. Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. The odds have been steadily improving for surviving childhood cancer, but certain types of cancer have still not yet received substantial research.
Formation of the Foundation
At a time when few programs were available in Alberta to help children and their families cope with cancer diagnosis and treatment, Kids Cancer Camps was formed. This group developed camps for children affected by cancer and their siblings in an effort to address cancer’s social and psychological effects. These programs are now internationally recognized. In 1999, the programs expanded to raise funds to support pediatric oncology research and clinical support. The new mandate has a vision to find a cure for every child and provide care for every family.
Supporting the Cause
The Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta holds fundraising events throughout the year and also has ongoing volunteer opportunities.
