An Institution in Cochrane
The founder of MacKay’s Ice Cream purchased a general store in Cochrane over 60 years ago and then began making and selling quality ice cream to attract custom to the shop. The tactic worked splendidly, and today the ice cream parlour is one of the major draws to the community. The ice cream was, and still is, made in small batches in order to control quality. On a record day it is said to have sold over 4500 ice cream cones, most of them double scoops.
Flavours, Flavours, Flavours
From a humble beginning, MacKay’s experimented extensively with different recipes to expand its offerings of flavours of ice cream. Today it has recipes for over 200 different flavours, though it regularly produces and sells about 50 of those. Among the more esoteric choices are bubblegum, buttery butter brickle, coconut delight, cotton candy, spotted cow, mochaccino, strawberry banana twist, rainbow, tiger, tropical mango and lychee. The favourites are still vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and maple walnut.

MacKay’s has expanded its production facilities over the years and is now a major supplier of ice cream, sherbets, sorbets and frozen yogurts to dozens of select restaurants and specialty food stores in western Canada. Most of the products do not contain eggs and are gluten free. A variety of nuts are used in the production, so if allergies are a problem, inquire before buying.
