The mainstay of Calgary's theatre avant garde, One Yellow Rabbit's trademark mix of poetic writing and aggressive physicality has made it a cult favourite in Canada and abroad. The Rabbits (or the Bunnies, as they're affectionately known) divide their time between premiering new work in Calgary and touring all over the place, such as their regular haunts of Toronto, Edinburgh and Glasgow are regular haunts.
The Digs
When they aren't occupying their 245-seat space in the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts known as the funky, black-box Big Secret Theatre, they use the stage to host some of Canada's most exciting theatre artists. Guests have ranged from master monologist Daniel MacIvor to puppet wizard Ronnie Burkett.
What's On
Every January, OYR presents the High Performance Rodeo, a month-long feast of experimental theatre and dance that dovetails with the playRites festival at the neighbouring Alberta Theatre Projects. The impressive guest roster in recent years has included Montreal's LaLaLa Human Steps and Carbone 14, plus U.S. performance diva Karen Finley and Tony-winning actor Brent Carver.
