A Healthy Option Downtown
In Calgary’s downtown condo jungle, healthy dining options are scarce once the sun goes down. Fortunately, Sahara is there to fill the void. This upscale Lebanese restaurant opened in the middle of the Calgary Flames’ run for the Stanley Cup in 2004, and though the hockey team lost, the restaurant became a winner. The warm colours of the desert and beautiful murals in the elegant open space make the restaurant an oasis in the midst of all an urban concrete. For a real taste of the Middle East, stop by on Friday or Saturday nights to be entertained by a belly dancer.
Try the Hummus
Sahara takes pride in the healthy aspects of Lebanese cuisine and makes everything on the premises. This restaurant is considered home to some of the best hummus (a spiced chickpea purée) in the city. Try a classic version or their more lavish hummus bi lahm, topped with minced beef and pine nuts. There is a good selection of appetizers and they are perfect for sharing with a crowd.
Can’t Decide? Let the Chef
From the grill there are shish kabobs, steaks and the well-known shishtaouk and shwarma plates – marinated chicken or beef served with spicy sauces. If there are two or more in your party, consider letting the chef do the menu selection for you. The Sahara dinner special is a selection of five appetizers, one salad, one main course choice and either a beef kabab or shish kafta, grilled seasoned ground beef mixed with onions and parsley. There is also a lunch buffet on Mondays through Fridays.
