The Menu Is Extensive and Worthy Of Some Study
Surya, in Hinduism, is the chief solar deity, as might be indicated by the logo for the restaurant. In Calgary, Surya is a relatively small restaurant in the Beltline district that has an intriguing and astonishingly inclusive menu of authentic East Indian cuisine. The atmosphere is comfortable and the staff is friendly and attentive. If you are unfamiliar with East Indian food, its extensive charms can be unveiled here. There is a buffet two evenings each week at which you can sample the offerings for later reference. Chances are you will return.

Vegetarian Offerings to Boot
If you prefer a vegetarian diet, there are lots of options available at Surya. Perhaps a Baigan Bhartha, a roasted eggplant pulp sautéed with fresh onions and tomatoes. Or a Malai Kofta, a vegetable dumpling with a mixture of potatoes, homemade cottage cheese, and spices done in a creamy sauce. Whatever the vegetarian taste, there are more choices here than is usually found in a restaurant.

Meat Lovers Are Also Blessed
If you savour meat dishes, Surya has a broad selection. Chicken dishes abound, including the ever-popular butter chicken. Lamb, beef, and goat are also on offer, some done in the traditional tandoor clay oven, some done in the wok. Seafoods prepared in traditional Indian style are also to be had. Whatever your choice, accompany the meal with a variety of Indian breads including naan, paratha and roti.
