What Is Sushi Anyway?
In general terms, sushi – which means “snack” in Japanese – takes several forms. Nigiri is an oblong mound of sushi rice that is hand-formed with wasabi and overlain with a thin slice of topping. Maki-sushi are rolls of rice and fillings wrapped in nori – a dried, pressed sheet of seaweed or alga – served sliced into small cylinders. Tamaki are cone-shaped pieces of nori, inside of which are fillings that spill out of the open end of the cone. Sashimi is a related dish that consists of thinly-sliced raw fish, served without rice.

Over the last couple of decades sushi restaurants have popped up everywhere, like mushrooms in the forest after a long-awaited rain. Many are the contemporary North American conception of the venerable Japanese cuisine, but this restaurant harkens back to the more authentic Japanese roots. Sushi Zeal serves sushi, and little else, eschewing the cooked Japanese dishes usually found in such restaurants. The place is owned and run by the sushi chef, and his renderings are, for the most part, traditional and authentic of the sushi art as practiced in Japan.

The menu at Sushi Zeal is extensive and offers all manner of sushi – nigiri, rolls, and tamaki – with a myriad of ingredients. Nigiri can be had with salmon, tuna, mackerel, red snapper, squid, sea eel, scallops and other toppings. Rolls include the traditional as well as North American variations like California rolls, caterpillar rolls and lots of others. Tamaki to suit your tastes are also available. Sashimi of salmon, tuna and other raw fish are also on the menu. The restaurant is intimate and simply furnished.
