Open Monday thru Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to midnight, and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m., The Den and Black Lounge offer food menus before, after and during class. The Black Lounge’s menu boasts pizza, pasta and appetizers. The Den has a bigger menu offering sandwiches, burgers and more.
Once run by the University of Calgary, the Den was taken over by the Students’ Union in 2000. Back then the Black Lounge used to be a dark and smoky hang out, hence the nickname ‘Black Lung’. At health official’s insistence, the area was renovated and consequencely revitalized. Two areas were combined and the Den and Black Lounge came to be.
Nostalgia and Character
Much of the previous flavor is still evident, as in the bar, which originally came from Chicago. The firepit in the Black Lounge was kept during the renos and lends a certain amount of nostalgia and character to the space.
On the U of C Campus
The Den and Black Lounge are available for campus events and cabarets. Teams, clubs and fundraisers often book this popular space for their events. Owned and operated by the Students’ Union, the Den and Black Lounge is the place to be and be seen on the University of Calgary campus.
