Respectful Remembrance
Take a step back into the past for a tactile glimpse into life during wartime. At Calgary's Military Museums in Calgary, artifacts and archival materials amassed since the country's birth have been preserved in order to better understand Canada’s military history. The museums serve as an educational support facility, as well as a military heritage and cultural public attraction within the community. The museums have undergone extensive renovations as of late, and are now a compilation of seven museums situated on 13 acres and encompassing 104,000 square feet of viewing area. As of 2007 the Military Museums now house the contents of the Naval Museum of Alberta, so it now includes artifacts from Canada's Army, Navy and Air Force.
Stories of Brave Men and Women
The Military Museums are a place where the sacrifices of soldiers are remembered through stories, images and displays depicting the courage and bravery displayed in the fight to defend and free our nation and others. Education for youth is a priority in portraying the impact of military events on the development of Canada.
The Main Players
The Military Museums showcase artifacts from Canada's most respected and historic fighting regiments, such as The Calgary Highlanders, the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, The King's Own Calgary Regiment and Lord Strathcona's Horse. Pick up a Choose Your Own Adventure Guide from the commissionaire's desk, which will help you plan your own tour of the museums. Helpful volunteers are often on hand to answer questions, as well. Be sure to have a look at the collection of military vehicles outside of the museum and don't miss the impressive diorama just inside the museum doors.
Museum Activities
During the summer months, group bookings can be made for the museums' Summer Youth Adventure Programs. Children between the ages of five and 12 have the opportunity to discover what it’s like to be a Canadian soldier. They can trudge through WWI trenches, handle artifacts and old uniforms and feel the weight of a UN helmet. They will also be treated to a picnic in the military vehicles' park. You can even book your child's birthday party at the Museums. The kids will spend two hours learning, having fun and being inspired.
