Urban Curvz advocates a Calgary theatre ecology that celebrates the excellence of its female practitioners. They now have a permanent home at the Pumphouse Theatre, bringing its unique stamp of theatre production to this vibrant venue. Its community is teaming with intelligent and talented women looking for consistent creative challenges. By encouraging and giving priority to the women artists of Canada, they wish to celebrate the female experience as a source of autonomous art. This group pushes forward the ideas of women in the business of theatre and creates a venue for them.
What they’ve done
Some of the events or productions they’ve been involved in so far are Curvilicious, an Annual Fundraiser, Queen Lear, written by Eugene Stickland and a tale about an aging actress who is cast in an all female version of King Lear. The Vajayjay Monologues is another fun stage production where they examine if the Vagina Monologues really did anything to move women forward, 11 years after the fact.
With a mission to provide opportunities for both new and emerging female artists this group is constantly producing new pieces that examine women’s lives in Canada and around the world. The work here gets people to ask questions about what it means to be a woman. They are always looking for people to help out, so it you have some time and some curves, think about getting involved. They have a volunteer application online.
