A charitable not-for-profit organization, the Women In Need Society is devoted to helping women help themselves through innovative and effective programs and services. WINS works with women who are coming out of shelters, single mothers and their children, women in transition and new Canadians, giving women the resources, knowledge, skills and confidence to be self-sufficient.
Women In Need Society operates three programs in Calgary: The free goods referral program provides women with access to basic needs such as clothing, household goods and furniture, a reference provided through over 60 different community agencies who provide a voucher for use at a WINS thrift store. Family resource centres, located in subsidized housing complexes, provide education and training in a wide variety of life and family skills, like parenting, literacy, ESL and basic computer skills, working with both women and children of all ages.
There are five thrift stores around Calgary operated by the Women In Need Society, selling affordable quality clothing and household goods that help support community programs. The stores also provide entry level employment opportunities for people with limited skills, provide donated items to people living in poverty and generate revenue to partially support WINS community programs.
