An Olympic Legacy For Local Skiers
Nakiska is a favourite destination for Calgary's families that love to ski. Designed and built to host the Alpine events of the 1988 Winter Olympics, this ski resort is less than an hour's drive from Calgary and a short hop to its Kananaskis Country neighbour, Fortress Mountain. Nakiska offers 28 marked trails over 750 skiable acres.The Nakiska Winter Sports School is a chance for everyone- from beginners to experts- to hone their skills and learn new tips and techniques to make your skiing or snowboarding experience more enjoyable. They offer a variety of packages and programs to suit your needs.
Make Some Memories
To ensure reliable snow conditions for the Olympics (critics complained at the time that it was on the wrong side of the mountains), Nakiska was given one of the most expensive and sophisticated snow-making systems available. Nakiska gets the lowest annual snowfall of all the ski destinations in the Alberta Rockies, so they rely heavily on their snowmaking technology to get them through the long cold winter. The advantage is that even when snowfall is down in the Rockies, they always have it covered.
Something for Everyone
Computer designed by Ecosign (of Whistler, B.C.), Nakiska’s runs offer lots of challenging blue and black tracks better suited to the family than the likes of famed alpine racers Pirmin Zurbriggen and Alberto Tomba. They even offer a kid-friendly area called Kritter World, where the little ones can begin a life-long love of the snow. The two lower quad chair lifts (Silver and Olympic) offer lots of options for blue runs and access to the Gold lift for those wanting to go all the way to the top of the mountain. If you need to rent skis or snowboards, Nakiska’s rental shop offers over 1,000 skis and snowboards for every level of skill.
