Profile
Ever since joining Confederation in 1949, Newfoundland has been able to put a different slant on any definition of a mosaic culture. Music is no exception as residents of the Rock have demonstrated an inkling to put a little something extra into whatever repertoire that existed for them to exploit. Celtic music in particular has enjoyed that extra Newfie kick into the genre, as displayed by the success of Figgy Duff, The Irish Descendants and Great Big Sea.
Finding traditional Celtic a little too stodgy for their pent-up energy, Great Big Sea (Sean McCann, Bob Hallett, Darrell Power and Alan Doyle) fused together a combination of old-time sounds with modern rock nuances. The result? A 1992 eponymous indie release which had Warner execs tripping over themselves to sign the act. Since then, all of their albums have gone gold, and most are multi-platinum.
Now a five piece act, with the addition of Kris MacFarlane on percussion, and Murray Foster replacing Darrell Power on bass, the band continues its hectic life of tours and recording.
